Many couples don’t come to marriage counseling because things are terrible. They come because something that used to feel easy has become hard, the conversations that used to flow have dried up, the connection that felt strong now feels unstable, and somewhere along the way you started feeling more like roommates than partners.
Every marriage goes through seasons, and some of those seasons are genuinely difficult. The people who find their way through them are often the ones who were willing to start with themselves first.
My name is Ceci Addams, and I’ve been working with women, and now also men, on their marriages and relationships for over two decades. I work individually, one-on-one with the person who’s ready to do the work, whether that’s because your spouse isn’t ready, or because you’ve come to understand that the most powerful place to begin is with yourself. When you shift how you show up, the dynamic between you and your spouse changes too.

Who This Work Is For
This is individual counseling, not couples sessions. I help you explore your own patterns, your own voice, and your own role in the relationship that’s struggling. Many people come to me because:
- Their spouse isn’t ready for counseling, but they are
- They’ve tried couples therapy before and want to focus on their own growth
- They want to understand their own patterns before bringing anyone else in
- They’re not sure whether to stay or go, and need clarity before making that decision
- They’ve come to understand that working on yourself is often the deepest path to change in any relationship
This work doesn’t replace couples therapy. But it does something couples therapy can’t always do: it gives you space to be completely honest about what you’re experiencing, without performing or protecting anyone else’s feelings.
What Marriage Counseling Can Help With
Communication Breakdown
The same argument keeps happening. You say one thing and your spouse hears something completely different. Or maybe you’ve stopped having the difficult conversations altogether because they never seem to go anywhere good. We work on understanding what’s happening underneath the words, what you actually need, what you’re actually afraid of, and how to bring more of yourself to the conversations that matter.
Feeling Disconnected
You share a home, a life, possibly children, and yet there’s a distance between you that you don’t quite know how to close. Emotional disconnection doesn’t usually happen overnight. It develops gradually, through the accumulation of unspoken needs, unresolved hurts, and the demands of a busy life. Marriage counseling helps you understand how the distance developed and how to begin closing it from your side.
Trust and Infidelity
When trust is broken, whether through infidelity or another form of betrayal, the pain can feel insurmountable. Some people decide they want to rebuild. Others need support to grieve and close a chapter with care. Either path requires honesty, courage, and a safe place to do the work. I have walked alongside many people through this, and I hold a safe space to facilitate open and honest exploration of what happened and what comes next.
Major Life Transitions
Having children. Raising teenagers. The empty nest. Retirement. A career change. A move. Every major transition puts pressure on a relationship because it asks both people to renegotiate their roles, their needs, and sometimes their identities. We work on navigating the change from your side, with clarity about what you need and what you’re willing to ask for.
Considering Separation
Sometimes people come to me not sure whether they want to save the marriage or end it. That’s a completely legitimate place to be. Good marriage counseling doesn’t assume the outcome. It helps you get clear on what you actually want and what you’re willing to do about it. Some people rediscover their connection in this process. Others find a way to separate with more grace and less damage. Whatever your path, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Codependency in Your Marriage
If you’ve spent years putting your spouse’s / partner’s needs ahead of your own, smoothing over their moods, protecting them from consequences, or losing yourself inside their life, then this work is for you. Codependency is a particular pattern, and it can be unwound. We work on building back your sense of self, separately from the relationship, which often changes the relationship in ways neither of you expected.
My Approach to Marriage Counseling
I believe that most relationship problems come down to people who want to be loved and understood but have gotten off track in how they try to get there. My job is to slow that process down, to help you really see yourself and what you’re carrying into the relationship, often for the first time in a long time.
If I see a relationship pattern that I think is important, I will be direct and name it. I hold that with genuine warmth and care for you. This isn’t a space where one person wins or loses. It’s a space where you get a real chance to be known, by yourself first, and from there, by the people who matter to you.
Online Counseling Across California
All of my sessions are held online via secure Zoom video, which means you can work with me from anywhere in California. Many people find that being in their own space makes the work easier, especially when what we’re talking about is intimate, vulnerable, or hard to put into words. Because I’m licensed in California, I can work with anyone who is physically located in the state, whether you live here full-time or are temporarily here for work, school, or visiting family.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer couples counseling?
I work individually with the partner who is ready to address their part in their relationship. While this isn’t traditional couples counseling, individual work on marriage and relationship challenges can be deeply transformative. When you shift how you show up, the dynamic between you and your spouse / partner changes too.
When should I start marriage counseling?
As soon as something feels off. Many people wait too long, sometimes years, after problems begin. The earlier you come in, the more options you have. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit. If you’re feeling disconnected, stuck in the same arguments, or like you’re growing apart, now is a good time.
Does individual marriage counseling actually work?
Yes, when you’re genuinely willing to engage with the process. You’d be surprised how often one person doing the work creates positive change in a relationship. When you shift how you show up, the dynamic between you and your spouse / partner changes too. Individual sessions focused on your relationship can be deeply valuable and transformative. I’ve worked with people in deeply difficult marriages who found their way to a stronger connection. I’ve also worked with people who used the process to part with more clarity and less pain.
What if my spouse won’t come to counseling?
Then we work with the person who’s ready, which is you. Please call me at 949-431-0497 and let’s talk about what’s possible from where you are now.
What happens in the first marriage counseling session?
The first session is a chance for you to share what’s been happening from your perspective, and for me to begin to understand the dynamics in your relationship. I listen carefully, and by the end of the first session we usually have a clearer picture of what we’re working on and how we’ll approach it.
How long does marriage counseling take?
It varies depending on what you’re working on. Some people make significant progress in a handful of sessions. Others work with me over many months, especially when rebuilding trust after a betrayal or navigating a major life transition. We figure out together what’s right for you as we go.
Where are your marriage counseling sessions held?
All sessions are held online via secure Zoom video. Because I’m licensed in California, I can work with anyone who is physically located in the state, whether you live here full-time or are temporarily here. My official office location remains at 23201 Mill Creek Drive, Suite 220, Laguna Hills, CA 92653, though I do not currently see clients in person there.
